Recently one of our patients’ asked, “Should I switch to a natural toothpaste?” Just because something, like toothpaste, has the word “natural” in it, doesn’t make it better. In fact, in some cases, it can be harmful to your oral and overall health.

While all toothpastes will assist your toothbrush in cleaning your mouth, some of them do a much better job than others. There are many different toothpastes on the market. Some are advertised as natural, breath-freshening, anti-cavity, or whitening.

The most important guideline when looking for a toothpaste is to find one that contains fluoride. Fluoride is one of the most important elements in maintaining a healthy mouth. It helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. In fact, regularly drinking fluoridated water and using toothpaste with fluoride helps protect your teeth from cavities and lowers your long-term dental care costs.

Most toothpastes contain fluoride, but many of the “natural” ones do not. If you are using toothpaste without fluoride, you may increase your chances of developing cavities and other dental health concerns. Protect your oral health. When you find a toothpaste that you enjoy, ensure that it has fluoride.

When Should a Child Start Using Toothpaste?

Taking care of a small child can feel like a full-time job. With diaper changes, bath time, bedtime routines, and mealtime, parents also need to care for their child’s teeth.

To make your day a little easier, we have some helpful guidelines for everyday oral care for your child from birth through toddlerhood.

Birth to 18 Months
As soon as your child’s teeth begin to come in, it is time to start cleaning them. For babies younger than 18 months, the best way to clean your child’s teeth is with a wet cloth or gauze and without toothpaste.

Gently rub the teeth and gums with a cloth over your fingertip. Along with nursing, formula and/or water, this is the only oral care that your young child needs. Once there is a full set of teeth, you can use a small, soft bristled toothbrush and water.

When to Start Toothpaste
Once your child is 18 months old, look for a toothpaste specially formulated for children. Young children have different dental needs and children’s toothpaste caters to these needs.

What to Look for in Children’s Toothpaste
> Safe to swallow: Young children tend to swallow their toothpaste rather than spitting it out. Make sure that your children’s toothpaste is formulated with this in mind.
> Pea-sized amount: Your child doesn’t need a lot of toothpaste to be effective, you only need to use a pea-sized amount.
> Low-fluoride: Fluoride is an important element of keeping teeth healthy and strong, but too much fluoride can be harmful for young children. Several varieties of children’s toothpaste have lower amounts of fluoride.
> Fun flavours: Some children, especially toddlers, tend to be picky. Be prepared to try a few different varieties of toothpaste to see which one is the best.

By taking time each day – morning and night – to clean your child’s teeth, you are helping your child create a lifetime of healthy dental habits.

What is the Best Toothpaste?

With the dozens of toothpastes available, we are regularly asked, “Which one is the best?” From being advertised as tartar controlling, whitening, anti-cavity, breath-freshening, and with fluoride, it can be a little overwhelming to find the right one.

We are here to help you decode the toothpaste aisle. Here are some guidelines for choosing (and using) toothpaste:

> Ignore brand names
There is no best toothpaste brand. Most contain ingredients recommended by the Canadian Dental Association. If you have a favourite brand, use it. It is important to find one that has a flavour and consistency that you enjoy.

> Use fluoride toothpaste
With the many different toothpaste packages proclaiming tartar control, anti-cavity, and sparkling mint crystals, the one thing you should definitely look for is fluoride. Fluoride is one of the most important elements in preventing tooth decay. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day will help maintain your oral health.

> Brush longer
For best results, brush your teeth for about two minutes. This will help you get the full benefit of your toothpaste’s fluoride and bacteria-scrubbing foam.

> Less is more
TV commercials often show a long, looping strand of toothpaste being squeezed onto a brush. You actually don’t need that much – a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is more than enough.

> Floss
We know that this has nothing to do with toothpaste, but flossing is very important. It doesn’t matter how carefully you weigh your options in the toothpaste aisle if you fail to floss. Flossing is one of the best things you can do for the health of your teeth and gums – so keep it up.
