Take Home Teeth Whitening

You can whiten your teeth at home during the day or at night. In both instances, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth to create custom bleaching trays. The whitening gel is placed in the tray before use.  It can take 5 to 14 days to see maximum results, wearing the trays for 15 to 30 minutes during the day or a minimum of 4 to 6 hours over night.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

Our in-office bleaching process lightens discolouration and tooth enamel. The procedure is simple. Your hygienist will cover your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed. A whitening gel will then be placed on your teeth and a light will be used to activate the gel removing any stains and discolouration.  After your one to two hour appointment, your teeth will be brighter and whiter.

Veneers

How to Care for Your Baby’s Teeth

In the first few months, you fall in love with your baby’s sweet gummy smile. Underneath those gums, your child already has the beginnings of their baby and adult teeth. To help keep your baby’s teeth healthy throughout childhood and adulthood, here are some simple steps.

Step 1 – Clean Your Child’s Teeth and Gums:
Even before your infant’s teeth come in, start wiping the gums with a damp cloth, gauze, or infant toothbrush. As soon as the teeth begin to erupt, you should be brushing your child’s teeth twice a day.

Step 2 – Avoid Bedtime Bottles:
Try not to give your baby a bottle at bedtime. If your child needs something comforting, try a bottle filled with water, not sugary drinks.

Step 3 – Avoid Sugary Pacifiers:
Do not dip your child’s pacifiers in anything sweet, even honey. Only use clean, orthodontic pacifiers, which are actually designed for the shape of your child’s mouth.

Step 4 – Minimize Teething Pain:
When teeth begin to come in, your child may experience some pain. Teething rings can be helpful. You can also help by rubbing your baby’s gums with a clean finger.

Step 5 – Visit the Dentist:
While planning your child’s first birthday party, remember to book their first dental appointment. At this appointment, we will review proper brushing technique and how to avoid potential issues. Many parents are unaware of dental issues until they become more serious. And your child will learn that going to the dentist is important for oral health.

What is the Best Toothpaste?

With the dozens of toothpastes available, we are regularly asked, “Which one is the best?” From being advertised as tartar controlling, whitening, anti-cavity, breath-freshening, and with fluoride, it can be a little overwhelming to find the right one.

We are here to help you decode the toothpaste aisle. Here are some guidelines for choosing (and using) toothpaste:

> Ignore brand names
There is no best toothpaste brand. Most contain ingredients recommended by the Canadian Dental Association. If you have a favourite brand, use it. It is important to find one that has a flavour and consistency that you enjoy.

> Use fluoride toothpaste
With the many different toothpaste packages proclaiming tartar control, anti-cavity, and sparkling mint crystals, the one thing you should definitely look for is fluoride. Fluoride is one of the most important elements in preventing tooth decay. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day will help maintain your oral health.

> Brush longer
For best results, brush your teeth for about two minutes. This will help you get the full benefit of your toothpaste’s fluoride and bacteria-scrubbing foam.

> Less is more
TV commercials often show a long, looping strand of toothpaste being squeezed onto a brush. You actually don’t need that much – a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is more than enough.

> Floss
We know that this has nothing to do with toothpaste, but flossing is very important. It doesn’t matter how carefully you weigh your options in the toothpaste aisle if you fail to floss. Flossing is one of the best things you can do for the health of your teeth and gums – so keep it up.

Is Fluoride Safe?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring chemical compound. Small amounts of fluoride are found in water, food, and many other substances. Many communities in Canada adjust the fluoride levels of their drinking water to bolster the oral health of the public and prevent tooth decay.

Decades of scientific research has demonstrated that fluoride is not only safe and beneficial, it is one of the most essential components of improving the oral health of Canadians during the past 50 years.

In recent years, some activist groups have been making claims about the supposed health risks of fluoride, objecting to its use in drinking water.  Many of these fluoride opponents are using suspect research, scare tactics, and arguments that are based on myths and misconceptions.

While fluoride is safe for everyone, parents of small children should be careful to use toothpaste specifically formulated for children. When young children swallow too much fluoride, it can cause dental fluorosis, a type of tooth discolouration, which can result in minor complications.  This is one of the reasons we teach kids not to swallow their toothpaste and suggest that parents only use toothpaste specially formulated for children with lower amounts of fluoride.

Credible scientific research has proved that fluoride is safe and beneficial. Regularly drinking fluoridated water and using toothpaste with fluoride help protect your teeth from cavities and lowers long-term dental care costs.

Swimming Pools and Your Teeth

There is nothing more satisfying than jumping into a cool swimming pool on a hot summer’s day. While the rippling water may be calling your name, if the pool has higher than normal acid content, it can damage your teeth.

Pool chlorine and pH levels need to be monitored on a weekly basis. Too much chlorination can negatively affect your dental health and can even lead to erosion of dental enamel.

Three Steps to a Healthy Tongue

Your tongue is quite an interesting muscle. It’s flexible, allowing you to speak and create sounds. It co-ordinates with your teeth and jaws, enabling you to chew food. It also has sensors, sensitive to heat, pain, touch, and taste.

Here are three steps to help keep your tongue in tip-top shape:

Step 1 – Avoid Adding Bling
Since there are billions of bacteria in your mouth, a tongue piercing can be a breading ground for bacteria. Oral piercings can also damage tongue nerves, alter tastebuds, chip/break teeth, and cause receding gums.

Step 2 – Clean Your Tongue
Make gently brushing your tongue a part of your daily brushing and flossing routine. A clean tongue keeps your breath fresher and your mouth healthier.

Step 3 – Self Tongue Exam
Oral cancer doesn’t always have uncomfortable side effects, that’s why regular tongue exams are so important. To do this, stick out your tongue, examine the top, bottom, and sides in a mirror. If there are any cuts, red, or white patches that don’t go away in a couple weeks, contact your dentist.
